Gold in Olympic Handball and Judo, Soccer Bronze Well Done to the Claregalway/Lackagh U14 Girls Olympic Handball Team in winning their Community Games All-Ireland Final in a nail biting finish against a very tenacious Firies,Co Kerry Team in Marist College Athlone last Sunday morning. The previous day, Saturday, the Girls made a slow start in their semi-final game against Lurgan, Co Cavan team. The game was in the balance with five minutes remaining when the Claregalway/Lackagh Girls scored two quick goals to secure a 6-3 victory to reach the Final. In a very exciting Final Claregalway/Lackagh were 2-1 up with thirty seconds on the clock, the Firies Girls Co Kerry snatched a late goal to bring All-Ireland Final to extra time. The Firies Girls got an early goal in extra time and with the Claregalway/Lackagh girls attacking in waves only managed to score a goal with two seconds on the clock to bring the game to Penalties, with the Claregalway/Lackagh Girls winning on 3-2 shootout. Saturday’s semi final the Claregalway/Lackagh Girls lost 1-0 to Fanad, Co Donegal.
